The founder of the college, Ch. Ishwar Singh (5 November 1926 – 1998), was born in a middle-class farmer family in village Staundi, district Karnal in Haryana. His origins couldn’t have possibly foretold the relentless efforts and achievements credited to his name, especially in the field of women’s education. A visionary, an agent for social change and a prominent political figure in the area, he set up the college in Jhandamal Dharamshala in Pundri in 1984.
The thriving institution of today had humble origins, starting with just 64 students enrolled in the twin streams of B.A. and B.Com. Famously, even while serving as the Speaker of the Haryana Legislative Assembly, two days of Chaudhary Sahab’s busy week were devoted exclusively to the institutions established and administered by him. Tales of his karmayoga are still told and heard in a region grateful for his progressive thinking, unimpeachable work ethic and dedication to social causes.
This is evidenced by the fact that the college is constructed on land collectively leased by a myriad of villagers who believed in Chaudhary Sahab’s vision for the area.
Ch. Ishwar Singh’s indefatigable efforts, with the passage of time, resulted in a lush, well-equipped and safe learning space for the women of the region, a historically disenfranchised group.
The college was one of the first educational institutions in the area which provided van service for years before the proliferation of public transport, so that lack of mobility could not stymie the hopes and dreams of young girls in the surrounding villages.
A consummate nature lover and environmentalist, Chaudhary Sahab also planted the campus with species as diverse as kadamb, amla, harad and bahera, and kept a strict inventory of the same. The saplings which flowered under his kind and attentive gaze now grow proud and tall on the college campus, providing shade and respite to all those who seek peace and comfort.
Today, the institution stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of Ch. Ishwar Singh’s vision, having evolved into a centre of higher learning that combines academic rigour with a commitment to holistic development.
